Spring Mill pond located at the end of
East Main Street on the south side just before Cemetery Road. The Spring Mill can be seen in the background at the left of the picture. It was located across the road at the corner of Mill Street. The mill race ran underground to the overshot mill wheel located on the south side of the mill building. The Old Spring Mill was built in 1812 by Daniel Butts and operated as a grist and flour mill. The mill was owned by Samuel Sherman in 1868; George Rhen in 1871; Sherman again in 1880; J. Chester Case in 1905. Sherman and Rhen remodeled the mill and installed steam powered rollers which produced a very fine flour. The mill has been known as "Sherman's Mill" through the years. |
