Back to 1874  Conneaut Creek Section Map

Kingsbury-Matson Mill inside the bend in the Conneaut.  The grist, flour and lumber mill was built by Munson B. Kingsbury circa 1837, powered by water from a dam built upstream across the Conneaut Creek.  The mill was reached from town by Kingsbury Road and the covered bridge which crossed the Conneaut at the site of an old ford.  Kingsbury Road continued past the mill, down a gully to the south (picture right) then past several houses, and north up the ridge to meet South Ridge Road about a mile east of the creek.    View is looking East from the bank across the Conneaut Creek, circa 1890.

The mill was sold to Kingsbury's son-in-law, Burton S. Matson in 1868 while Kingsbury operated a mill in Sharon, PA.  Kingsbury later returned to join Matson at the mill.  The mill is in the foreground, several houses can be seen in the distance.  The bridge, mill and houses are no longer standing.  The large property is now a preserve owned and protected by  the Western Reserve Natural History Museum.
